65 Black Teachers and Teachers of Color from 23 rural communities registered to design eco-friendly activities to immerse students in learning experiences.
Top projects received $500 grants in Lexington, KY, Creshaw, Los Angeles, CA and Atlanta, GA. Surveyed all participants to gauge the pilot’s efficacy.

Teachers found our partnership with Data Writing Stories valuable in using climate-related datasets to plan students’ immersions, and the mini-grants were crucial in removing barriers for planning and implementing eco-friendly learning experiences.

All participants reported positive changes in behavior, with a newfound motivation to embed equity in their immersions for all living creatures and take action towards a more sustainable neighborhood that also required engaging their families during school breaks.

Despite advances in remote sensing and GIS for analyzing socio-economic data, they often fail to support community-based efforts. Climate hazards are forecasted, but cities suffer devastating consequences: increased poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and unreliable access to healthcare and food security.

With over 126 million people residing in coastal counties in the USA, facing heightened flood risks, and 31 million individuals in black and minority communities, where 20 million have fallen into poverty since 2021, the Deep Data Detectives (D3s) Initiative emerged as a pivotal community. D3s actively engage in research, shaping and driving sustainable change from grassroots levels upward.
